Biography

Rivka Monheit helps a broad range of clients in the life sciences industries implement practical, effective intellectual property solutions that minimize risks and maximize rewards.

Rivka has extensive experience counseling universities, research institutions, individual inventors, multinational companies, and startups with respect to medical devices, drug-delivery materials, imaging and diagnostic agents, personal care products, and chemical technologies. She regularly drafts and prosecutes patent applications, invalidity and non-infringement opinion letters, and negotiates and drafts patent license agreements. She has also filed appeal briefs and presented oral arguments before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.

Personal connections are a cornerstone of Rivka’s practice. She is responsive and attentive to detail and works closely with clients to understand their objectives and support their business goals. Rivka brings a strong grasp of complex science and a sophisticated understanding of the marketplace to her work for her clients.

Rivka strives to secure broad, yet commercially meaningful claim scope for her clients’ patents. This approach can facilitate licensing opportunities and provide patent protection for future commercialization plans. Rivka’s communication skills are key to her success. She effectively builds rapport with patent examiners and uses interviews with them to expedite prosecution and achieve her clients’ goals.

Clients rely on Rivka for her knowledge of intellectual property issues in the U.S. as well as in Europe and around the world. Cognizant of the ever-changing global landscape for patent law, she drafts patent applications that will support patent prosecution and enforcement in the U.S. and other jurisdictions.

Rivka is actively involved in a number of professional organizations. She is a member of the Georgia Bar, American Bar Association (ABA), American Intellectual Property Law Association, and the American Chemical Society. In addition, she currently serves on Council, the Membership Board, and the Section 101 Task Force for the ABA’s Intellectual Property Law Section. In 2019-2020, she served as the Chair for the Intellectual Property Law Section of the Georgia Bar. Previously, she served as chair of its Community Outreach Committee, Patent Committee, the Philanthropy/Outreach Committee, and the Special Events Committee and organized a variety of continuing legal education (CLE) programs, including a popular “IP Boot Camp.” Since 2014, Rivka has served on the Advisory Committee of Georgia's Pro Bono Patent Program (Georgia PATENTS).
